I'm left handed and would like to know how to tell which hand does what for an instrument like: piano, guitar and drums. These are the three I'm interested in learning. I've played guitar before, but found out my left hand is better for strumming than picking.

Is all just by feel or is there a philosophy and method to it, any ideas or websites that explains this?

I don't think there is any set rules about which hand to use. Just use whichever one works best for you. You can get left-handed instruments but they are usually more expensive.

Obviously that guy is no musician - lol (lefthanded instruments that cost more)

Piano, it doesn't matter what handed you are, it plays the same.

Guitar, you should play the way it's intended, but if it's really difficult for you, all you do is reverse the strings and play it the other way (strum with the left, fret with the right)

Drums... please... there's no left-handed/right-handedness here and the only thing you could possible do would be reverse the order the drum set is in, but why would you do that? Just learn it as is.

There's a right way and a wrong way to hold and key on each instrument and they've never been designed to right or left hand. Keep in mind that because the left side of the brain is dominant in creative thinking, that TONS of artists and musicians are left-handed. Probably MOST if I had to hazard a guess... so just play the way it's intended. Life will be easier. You'll be able to pick up any guitar and play it without restringing the whole thing.

Being left handed doesn't change anything at all when it comes to music. I know of a celebrity who played guitar with his left hand! I can't remember his name but I'm sure he didn't give a hoot what others thought of him. Music was his passion and he would do anything to be a part of it. Piano doesn't involve only one hand, you need both hands to play! Wether you're right or left handed, piano is not a difficulty. Drums is the same way too. the concept of this instrument is rhythm. If you can't count on your hands and feet, than drums is definitely not for you. So you're left handed, so what? This is just a minor issue, other people go through worst than that and they're not complaining. Just like the song says: "My brother, don't worry, be happy."

I think it is by feel. I write left handed. I bowl left handed. If I were to play the guitar I would strum the strings with my left hand. But I hit a golf ball and a baseball right handed. I never had to decide these things. I just somehow knew which way to do it.

I guess it would depend on the type of instrument that you play. In middle and high school I played the clarinet. I am right-handed and as such my right hand was always placed at the top of the clarinet. If I were left handed my left hand would have been placed at the top. There were members of our band who were left-handed. I noticed that they either placed their left hand on the top of their instruments or moved their instrument to their left. I am not exactly sure what the drummers did. Anyway, it does not matter if you are left-handed or right-handed. You do not have to play right-handed (expect for the piano because of the arrangement of the notes). There are guitars made for left-handed players.

On piano and drums there would be no difference for a left handed or right handed person plays the same way. You can buy left handed guitars and you might check into that go to :www.washburn.com they might carry them.

for some instruments, a hand is required to be in a certain position in order to play it, but i feel that if you are comfortable with the hand that ur using, u should stay that way. oh, but for the piano, left hand goes left, and vice versa.

I'd like Neal Morse to smash me, solely because he appears to be a pacifist. :3 I'd be a guitar. The last song played on me would have to be "Time" by Pink Floyd at the hands of David Gilmour, but someone else smashes me. :D
