The U.S. was founded upon liberalism.

Are you (and the guy claiming to be a PhD) saying that the U.S. is a failure?

I don't think liberalism can be a failure. This because liberalism is an ideology, not a policy. The ideas of classic liberalism are not the same as modern liberalism. Modern liberalism reflects the views of the extreme left in thinking. The extreme left wing is elitist and truly believes they are smart enough to decide what is best for everyone. If you disagree then you are either brain washed, or to stupid to see their brilliance and compassion. If you speak out against them you have to be convinced that your thinking is incorrect, or shouted down as intolerant, racist, ect. Americans as a general rule do not conform to extreme thinking on either side of the political spectrum, but rather are a diverse mix existing somewhere in between the 2 extremes. The Democrat party in general has been hijacked by the extreme left. This is due primarily to the mass exodus of conservative leaning democrats in the eighties. This statement refers to the party leadership, not the electorate. Many Democrats I know are the same as they have always been, but their voices are no longer represented properly by the party in general. As long as this divide exists liberal policies will continue to fail because they are rooted more in a socialist structure than a democratic one. It is my belief that if moderates do not regain control of the Democratic party, the party is doomed to extinction and fracture.

Liberalism is a failure because it follows the concept of "community". Liberal people often use terms like "the community", or the "the people". They try to give the impression, (and many no doubt truly believe), that they are working towards a common good, that all intelligent people think like them except for a few evil capitalists and their misguided followers. Liberals fel they can make decisions on behalf of others because they know best, they are working for the good of the community, the prolertariat, the peoople etc. Liberals often distrust democracy, freedom and individualism because they feel many people cannot be trusted to decide what is best for them. Libertarians and conservatives on the other hand believe that people should be free to choose their own destiny, and to live with the consequence of their choice. Communism is an extreme example of Liberal thinking, so is nazism, nazi is german for National Socialist.

The Constitution of the United States was written by liberals was that a failure? FDR, a liberal, succeeded in bringing us out of The Great Depression. That was certainly not a failure. Clinton turned a deficit into a surplus and was president while we had eight years of relative peace and the greatest prosperity of the 20th Century. He also had arrested brought to justice the perps of the original WTC bombing. That certainly sounds like success to me. Compare that to the conservatives record. The depression that FDR brought us out of was brought about as a result of the FAILURES of the CONSERVATIVE administrations of Hoover, Coolidge, and Taft. Clinton inherited a huge deficit from the previous Bush and Reagan administrations. How did Reagan "succeed" in bringing down Communism? In part by illegal arm sales to Iran and the Contra and by supporting and arming the Taliban in their war against the U.S.S.R. Reagan also started Saddam Hussein in weapons building in his war against Iran. One only need to look at Iraq and the hunt for Osama bin Laden to see the failures of the current neocons, who control all three branches of the government. Thank God Bush has been a failure at selling out Social Security. About the only thing the current neocons haven't been a failure at is destroying the Constitution. We'll see who has failed in the next election.
