Turn your computer off IMMEDIATELY. It has a short time to live. (I've seen this many times). Here is what I have done.
I have run to STAPLES and picked up a similar size drive that I know will work in my computer. I remove the old one, then install the new one. I used the RESTORE disk that came with my computer and reinstalled the system. I then installed the Anti-virus and other programs to make my computer work. Then I configured my email program, so email could work.
Then, I installed the OLD drive as a SLAVE drive. I restarted the computer. I then created a folder on the new computer. I copied the MOST important stuff first. I did it this way, so if the old drive DIED while on the operating table, I saved something anyway. Then I copied everything else.
I was interested to see how much longer the drive would work. In a day, the drive was dead and buried. But through quick action, everything was saved.
Good luck... I hope that you got my message in time.

Quite likely your hard drive is on its way to hardware heaven, and yes, as everyone else has said, back up / ghost your data quickly! Be ready to go get a new drive.
HOWEVER - seriously, could it be weather affecting your system? My hard drive was intermittently making a (terrifying) whining noise like one on the Hitachi page (see link) below, but only when the mornings were really really cold. I realised that when the heating was on in my 'puta room, the noise didn't happen. I tested it several times by putting the heat on one morning, the next not. Now it's warmer weather and 8 months later, I'm still using the same drive, no problems. Got a lot of backups just in case

depends if its a clicking or grinding. Some sounds the hard drive is supposed to make others its not. If it only makes the noise when you are writing something to the disc and its not a constant or when the computer is booting up, you are probably okay, if its makes noises whenever and its more like a loud clicking then your hard drive may be failing. Check with the manufacturer of your hard drive and see if there is a diagnostic tool for your hard drive.

Didn't you ask this question awhile ago?
Hard drives make a certain amount of noise. If you've been using computers for awhile, you would recognise the normal sounds that it makes. If your hard drive just recently started making louder and strange sounds, then that could mean that your hard drive is dying.
If you don't know if the sounds are normal, take the computer to a shop and let a tech hear it.
Unless they're jerks, they won't insist that they open your computer (and charge you), instead of plugging in the computer and listening to the hard drive.

If it is making continuously, it is wrong. You need to backup the data and get it replaced. If it is making during operations that to multiple operations at a time, it is quite common.

There may be many reasons for this problem. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful

My old floppy disk drive did this occasionally, but never the actual hard drive itself.

It is the sound of near death. There is bearings in some drives. They become worn with age.
