The first answer is very comprehensive. As a real life example, do you or your friends have braces on your teeth? If so and it's early in your treatment, the wire going through the brackets is probably nickel-titanium and this is an example of a Shape-Memory Alloy. When your teeth are all over the place the wire has to bend in all different directions to fit in the brackets and this can be difficult with normal stainless steel wires. The Ni-Ti wires are flexible at cooler temperatures but when your body heat warms them up, or you drink a hot drink, they stiffen more. The advantages are that the same wire can be used for longer and it hurts less!

These include electrochromic materials, which change their colour or opacity on the application of a voltage (e.g. liquid crystal displays), thermochromic materials with color depending on their temperature, and photochromic materials, which change colour in response to light - for example, light sensitive sunglasses that darken when exposed to bright sunlight.

smart material would be something that has the ability to change shape and return back to its original shape. Like lykra or polyester can stretch but it returns back to the original shape.

A smart material is one that has a memory and sometimes reverts back to its original form, i.e. chocolate gets melted down in a glass bowl over a saucepan of water if its left too long it will revert back to solids. i think this is one example i hope it helps.

It can change shape and then go back to it's original shape.
Example - Elastic, some plastics, knife blades..etc.
