I know that most of you will be American and will probably say that the USA is the best thing since sliced bread. However, I challenge you to be analytical and tell me what you think are the major problems in the United States.
P.S. I'm not American, I've never been there, I'm a teacher so this isn't a homework question. I'm just curious to see how self-critical people can be of their own country.

True. Asking non-Americans will get different results but question is an exercise in self-analysis.

I suppose one of the biggest problems I see is the lack of communication.
Communication between Gov. and the people
People and the people.
This is something that has become more previlant since 9-11.
We as the people blame our government for their inability to master the problems set forth before them. We as the people have chosen people to represent us in all affairs and yet as time passes we find that these people do not do what they agreed to do. This tends to cause bitterness and anger and the only people we can blame for this is ourselves. So when an issue comes up that we as the people don't like our government refuses to listen so we take it out on each other.
Yes, we chose these people, but at the same time we chose these people with the beleif that they were going to do the things they told us they were going to do. We pay them to listen to us and we pay them to do their jobs and yet when we have an opinion and an idea that will help them establish and better understanding of here and now problems they won't listen.
This is becoming an ever rising problem because most Americans do not want to be bothered with whats going on in the world around them. It isn't until it steps into their front yards and begins removing their rights as Americans that they begin to protest. But, by that time it is much too late! We have too many people with too much money who believe that because they have lots of money they know better than we, what we the people want! How could someone who has millions of dollars possibly understand what a person who struggles every moment of every day just to put food on the table really needs or wants?
The people really need to start being more aware of what is really going on and stop believing for one second that what goes on outside the U.S. doesn't effect them.
With over 365 Billion dollars in relief aide going out to other countries, how could this not effect us? We have people in this Country that don't have Health Insurance and can't afford to have surgeries inside the U.S. and yet our Government feels it is more important to send this money away from us?
There really needs to be a happy medium!
We can help, but one of the things that really must change is our Governments insistance in making every other country a priority over our own! If a war was to break out in our Country and on our soil does our Government beleive, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the people would be strong enough to help defend our lands? With children in our own country dieing of starvation, drug over doses and desease, who will be their to do this? So many issues and so little time!
You wanted to know what Americans thought well I am about as American as they come. I love this country with all my heart and would die for this country. However, I do not consider my country our government! Until they can prove to me they care about us, I will fight for the people and not the government! I need to see some big changes in the way things are being run before I will ever change my thoughts. People are not Projections and Propositons or insightful speaches. We are flesh and blood and heart and soul! We need the protection of our government and not in a manner that takes away our rights! We need them to see that people in this Country work hard and the money we give them comes from blood, sweat and tears!
The people need to stand up and make a difference and they need to stop making excuses. Vote for the people who want to make a difference. But, if they dont keep their promises don't hesitate. Get them out of office and find someone else! We pay the bills! We give them their jobs! We are the people and we need to act like we are!

America is no longer able to produce greatness for all man kind because of the government. Laws cannot be produced to really help the people. Business is constantly hampered by regulations. People who brake the law are not dealt with. We have a population that puts emphasis on self aggrandizing and self promotion. Humility and shame are things of the past. Our legal system is so codified that the judges rulings are backed by president from what ever they want to find. People are so concerned about their own children that they want them rapped in a box and never exposed to anything in the world.
We have a population that wants everything, and thinks that the earth owes them.
I can go on for hours with all that is wrong with the country. But I do still believe that with all the faults, the American system is set up as the best in the world. All we need is the right people to make it happen. It just seems that now we don't have the right people in power.

Corrupt government is the number one problem. They keep passing tax breaks for the upper middle class and the rich, while everyone else gets screwed.
Racism. Still a major issue here, though most people would say no. Look at the aftermath of the hurricane.
Education. Still not even close to where it should be.

Well, this is an expansive question - as an American from USA, living in Thailand, there is plenty that troubles me abt America and certainly amongst my friends, many have the same issues.. most boil down to total distrust of our leadership, the stupidity of partisan politics and for me, in particular - the double standards and out and out moronic deceiving name calling - - ie - We go 1000s of miles, launch an unprovoked attack on a sovereign nation, who could just as easily been an ally, and then call them the "insurgents" - well, obviously, I can go on - but hope this helps and many many Americans are very upset w/the leadership and direction..
