I notice that football players talk on the phone after a play...who do they talk to and what do they talk about?

Talk to the coaches

Most often, it's their offensive coordinator (or some other lower-level coach), who's watching the whole field from a booth high up in the stadium. Since the OC can see the whole field, he can tell the player about things the player might not have seen from his vantage point. (You'll often see players looking at black & white snapshots of the field from the OC's perspective on the sidelines, too. It's all about figuring out coverages, formations and stuff.)

I can't remember the last time I watched a Steeler game on TV when they didn't give a shot of our OC, Ken Whisenhunt, in the booth. Our defensive coordinator, Dick LeBeau, is always on the sidelines, though. I don't know whether it's a matter of preference or of custom for the DC to be on the sidelines.

Good question, BTW. I'm sure lots of people wondered the same thing, but were afraid to ask!

They are talking to the coach (wether it is the QB coach or the Offensive Coordinator) about the play. Usually after a big mistake like an interception you see them on the phone.

Most of them are on the phone with Jessica Simpson going over details of their next frolic or just congratulating her on ruining the Cowboys shot at the SB again this season.

After a good play, I like to think they get on the phone with their agents to ask them why they didn't get more money on the contract they just signed. "Did you see that touchdown Jerry?! Show me the money!!!"

After a bad play, I think they call Balco.
