It really depends on the program you have. Some people fly the same airlines frequently and they accumulate miles by flying a lot of times. They usually need to accumulate 25000 to 50000 miles in order to get a free flight somewhere else. Some credit card companies give you miles each time you use your credit card. They give you 1 to 3 miles for each dollar you charge. Some credit card companies are associated with specific airlines and you can use your accumulated miles only at non peak times on that particular airline. Other credit card companies let you book your flight on any airline using their card and then you get reimbursed for the charge. There are no set ways it works. Each company is different and you just have to read the terms of service.
