I'm not terribly computer literate and I don't want to delete the wrong thing by mistake! Thanks very much for your help.

deleting 'history' removes the list of websites uv VISITED.
however, if u want to delete the searches uv typed, go to tools in the browser menu, choose 'internet options', click the 'content' tab located above, then click 'Auto complete' at the bottom, choose 'Clear forms'.
U can also 'clear passwords'.
Thats it, ur done.

right click on start menu
then go to property
then in the start menu tab click customize
then in other window click advance
now at the end of the window u can see a check box followed by a button having the caption"clear list". just click on this button and your all visited or opened links will disappear from the dropdown list of your internet explorer.

The site has a tutorial showing you how to use it. It will clean your browser history, temporary files, cookies etc. Safe and simple to use.

oh dear, what have you been up to? sounds like you're trying to cover your tracks, take my advice - if you're going to do something dodgy always best to do it on someone else's computer, they may get a nasty shock when they take it into PC World for a repair but hey, that's their lookout
