As long as you don't select the switch that is all democrat or all republican you can vote for who you want. It's only in the primaries where you have to vote a party.

Yes, but it is often a ploy on the part of a party that thinks it will lose an election to encourage people to vote for 3d party candidates. These candidates are usually focused on narrow issues and are not best qualified to govern, but votes cast for the 3d party candidate often have a disasterous affect on close elections. Look back to Bush/Gore, when several swing states went to Bush becuase extreme lefties voted for Nader, who never stood a chance of victory. Those votes were wasted, and the result has been 8 years of war, bloodshed, erosion of freedom, loss of international prestige, the erosion of the middle class, and less security. So a vote for a 3d party candidate will probably never result in a 3d party victory, but it could adversely affect the nation.

Yes!! You should always vote by the candidates platform and not their party. If you believe in what they're saying during their campaign and like them, then by all means, vote for them. The party system was NOT created for us to vote by party. It was created so we'd have 2 different views. Always vote for the candidate and what they stand for, not their party.

Yes,
you only have to declare your party in a primary election in which you are given that party's ballot when you go into the booth.

In a November Election, you are given a ballot with all candidates before you go into the booth.

No too much of a chance that they would be controlled by the left. Even if they were an independent thinker there would always be that chance that the left would influence them in there decisions.
