No, we were in a really nasty Cold War with the Soviet Union up until the day they started to break up....
I can still remember people hoping there would be an Earth next month, every month, but never being sure of it because we could have destroyed the planet any time in a matter of hours...
and we came close to doing that more than once...

Yes, I agree that world was a more stable place when the old Soviet Union was an international entity.

Because there is only one military power on earth now, and that is a dangerous imbalance. Anyone who holds this power could act as the world's dictator.

The cold war was a two ways monitor against nuclear power dominance and other excesses.

Russia and the US have been allies against terrorism since this entire issue started. So I would have to say no, especially since Russia was also where the power of the USSR came from in the first place.

The terrorism came from Saudi Arabia. Osama Bin Ladin's family is in power there and they are friends with the US. Since US soldiers were on the ground in Saudi Arabia, Osama felt that the US soldiers were soiling the Arab ground.

Strange that he should think US soldiers soil the ground, since US citizens have been in Saudi Arabia for many years before the soldiers came. But insanity does not have to make sense and is worse when there are no controls. That is to say, Osama has a lot of money and no one stopping him from insane acts.

The real issue here is how to teach the Arabs to love all people and not choose sides. Arab culture is very strict and they are raised to believe that outsiders are unclean and impure. They need to change their religious teachings, much as Christianity had to be redirected.

It took many years, but Christians finally realized that the Crusades were not such a great way to get converts. Christianity has a long way to go toward showing love for all people, but it is now more gentle than the Muslim teachings. Both religions need to embrace all people.

Take care,
Troy

The USSR has about the right amount of power but the USA has too much at this time. Terrorists will remain either way.

If the Soviets were still powerful, there are still terrorists because of the existence of Israel.
