Could you give me an explanation regarding the very popular personal name "Ben". Is there any chance that Ben is an abbreviated form of another (fuller) name?

Most commonly it is short for Benjamin but 'Ben' means 'Son of' so there are many names that start with 'Ben'. Benjamin means 'Son of my right hand', Benoni means 'Son of my sorrow' and then there are names like Benjoel, which means 'Son of Joel'. Hope that helps.

It is a diminutive, yes. It is short for Benjamin but can be used in its own right. Another similar name is Benny which follows the same rule as Ben.
