It depends on what sort of genre you want to buff. Most people should watch the classics like Rocky Horror Picture Show and Casablanca etc, simply to get a feel for everything the movie industry has changed of the years. I think everyone on the planet should watch the following five movies at least three times.

1. Chasing Amy - it gives both sexes a chance to really see how much we stuff each other around.

2. SAW - simlpy because it is a cool movie.

3. John Q - When you see it you'll know why.

4. Dogma - one of the funniest ever made.

5. Saving Private Ryan - even for those of us who hate war movies (including myself) this movie hits right in the ticker.

Look up the American Film Institute's "Top 100 movies of all time" lists (some for comedies, drama, etc.) and check those out. "Citizen Kane", "Casablanca", and "2001: A Space Odyssey" are all "must see" movies, but there are 97 other movies on that list. Anything that has won several awards is also worth looking at, and always try to get the foreign movies with subtitles instead of being dubbed in English because those movies are cheating you out of half of the REAL performances by the actors. Also, always try to watch the movies in the original format, and try to see them on the big screen - especially the newer movies with state of the art digital effects - it makes a big difference. Have fun!

If you really want to be a movie buff, don't think of them as movies you "should" see, because then your opinion will already be made for you, and you'll just be another mindless drone saying Citizen Kane or Casablanca is the best movie ever. Watch movies that interest you, and decide for yourself if you like them.
I like to use Netflix- not just to get movies, but when you rate how much you liked movies you've seen, they'll recommend new ones for you to see based on what you like.
