Ever been out on a whale watch trip?
If not, I can see why you can't understand why people love whales so much.
Besides, they are social animals, much like humans! The mothers nurse and care for their babies for years, like a human mother. They communicate with their own dialect, they often hunt together (you should even read about bubble net feeding techniques), and when one is ill or trapped in low tide (in some species) they'd all rather die together than leave that one alone.

The Icelanders do not catch the wales for scientific purposes, the do it for commercial reasons. The Japanese use the same argument because it is the only reason that whaling can be carried out and the countries lie to get round the rules.
Why do we like wales so much? well the are not a threat to us and we are amazed at their size, we don't see a lot of them because they are travelling around the world and we only see them when they are close to land and i guess they are mammals like us.

I completely agree, it's ridiculous that non-cute species are allowed to go the way Darwin intended but cute species are being kept alive for no other reason than the tendency of people to put their hands in their pockets when you rattle a jar and go "save the (insert name of cute or non-cute species)"
The animal population of the world is essentially there to do us as much good as possible, not to be kept alive by us at all costs. There's not even a realistic threat of the whale going extinct, but still, because they're big and cuddly, we jump through hoops to make them comfortable.

they dont eat fish they eat plankton an shrimps. people just think we should have a bit more respect for planets largest species. also its to do with the cruel way in which they are caught, the hunt can last hours, and also becuase they show a higher level of intelligence and family bond than say normal fish. if a member of the pod is killed they all feel it. thats why they end up all beaching sometimes when one does

I have a question, what can you learn from hunting a whale, surely they know by now that they are fat, swim and make great Thames attractions. Your not goiung to find out the meaning of life by killing one. So just leave them alone. In fact if your a fisherman, get another job because you probably smell like one.

Whales are gentle giants of the seas. People want them for food, fat and happiness in hunting. Rules must be laid out for hunting of these whales.

Whales have larger brains than humans, more complex language (one recorded whale song had more "words" than the Iliad and the Odyssey combined), they are friendly toward humans when not being harpooned, and have close knit families. At least, so I hear.
