You're obviously not completely tone deaf or you wouldn't know your voice is absolutely terrible - so there is hope!
Like any other skill, singing needs practice and feedback. Doing this on your own is likely to be difficult and embarrasing. If you're in the UK, try and find a singing teacher. There are two ways to do this:
1) Try your local authority adult education department and see if they have a singing course. There is usually one with a name like "everybody can sing". If you're in London, Morley College also run similar courses.
2) Find a local choir (most churches have one) and get the name of the person who runs it. He'll probably be a music teacher who'll give you some basic lessons - or he'll know someone who can.
Who knows - you might find you're good at it.

Bullshit! There is no such thing as a bad singer. I mean, check out all those singers out there who don't have the most perfect of voices like Blues Singers, Macy Grey, Kurt Cobain. It really depends what sort of music you sing to as well. If you were to front a rock band, you wouldn't need a perfect voice, you could just let rip. Besides that, it takes a lot of guts to sing out loud and you're doing nothing wrong. If you wanna sing you go for it! Some people are idiots. I have a terrible singing voice and i'm forever singing outta tune but i get gigs and people learned to love me eventually. If you really believe in singing, you should carry on regardless of other people's opinions. At the end of the day you sing for yourself, not for other people. X

If you don't want to take singing lessons then I would just suggest singing along to songs that have nice melodies and turn the volume up really high so you can't hear yourself sing but at least you will believe you can! Thats what I used to do hehe! Do you have a keyboard or piano? If so then just practise singing up the different scales to doe, ray, me etc and that will inevitebly help you sing more in tune. Or you could get a song book of songs you like and just practise singing either with keyboard or guitar. I don't know any techniques as such but I'm sure if you go to your local music shop they'll have books on how to sing.
Good Luck!

I have been a singer for years, and i have never had a singing lesson in my life, and have to say that other people think that i have been to singing lessons...it runs in the family we all can sing...i believe you are either gifted with a beautiful singing voice or not, and if you cannot sing in tune then you really need singing lessons, so you can practice the techniques that help with breathing and helping you to tune your voice so to speak.

Freddie Mercury profited greatly from adopting a flamboyantly homosexual lifestyle, as have a great many other vocalists. Alternatively you could go down the Pavarotti route of eating pies and cakes all day long.
If that isn't you, you might try listening to "doh, a dear" from the sound of music on a constant loop. You will soon be insane and will not care about music.

I work in the music industry and believe me, a lot of singers cannot hold a note. If you want to sing in tune like all the boy bands get Auto-tune software. All recording studios use it and it is normally used in live gigs as well. Either that or enjoy your voice for what it is and let your attitude get the deal..

If you want to know a very good vocal coach try to visit https://tr.im/ltHxA an online vocal coaching tutorial. Everything, ranging from breathing fundamentals, vocalizing exercises, techniques on singing high and low notes, how to not go off-key/out of tune/off-sync, musicianship and music theory, proper diction and articulation, and a lot more are covered, all in our native language. It can be quite technical in nature, but it really helps since it covers the musical aspect of singing deeply and not just concentrates on how to impress people with your vocal range, riffs and runs and other cliches that do not necessarily make one a complete vocalist.

Depending on where you live, there are 'Can't sing choirs' (definitely around in London anyway), some of them have been known to claim that after a no. of sessions, no one would believe you hadn't always been able to sing. Try adult education institute brochures or the Web. AE places also usually have classes in 'musicianship' to train your musical ear. Failing that, take singing lessons but group AE classes are cheaper.

To be honest, I think you can either sing or you can't. People that 'can' sing are able to improve their voice but I'd forget it if you have no tune whatsoever.
Should we be looking out for you on X-Factor then?!

Try finding a voice coach in your local area, or even local colleges offer voice coaching class... but you will have to sing in the class :)
