As our other friends have rightly said, it is easy money that is tempting the Bollywood producers to go for remakes of old 'hits'. It is a fact that copying is far too easier than producing something original which requires talent, imagination, ingenuity, courage and, above all, sense of duty. With the deterioration in all walks of our societies, who bothers for those qualities? Since the foundation of Bollywood is resting on black money, the production of movies is dictated by the choice of financers and not of producers. Hence, the recent spurt in remakes. However, the time will definitely come when there will be nothing left to copy or imitate. Till then the audience, majority of which is dumb and blind (like voters in our country), will like to get cheated!

As a former (and hopefully future) filmmaker, I can tell you that remakes are rarely as good as the original production, but remakes are made because if the original production did well then the thinking goes that an updated version will also do well. It costs a lot of money to make a major motion picture, so making a remake takes some of the risk out of the chances that the movie will not make money. And sometimes the remake is better than the original - an example might be Jimi Hendrix's version of Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower". There's nothing wrong with the original version, but most people when asked about that song will think of the Jimi Hendrix verson. I know that's not a movie, but the example fits here in a parallel way.

It is safer to do a remake, but sometimes the remake is good. But in order for that to happen the remake needs to have more to say, something different, a different take on the whole thing, an update. Action films especially can use a remake and incorporate new filming techniques into their fighting scenes. If film companies are really looking for a quick buck they make sequals. They are just cheap knock-offs of the original and unless the original was planned as a multi-film venture then they just feel like an afterthough. Which they are!

There are some Cheap producers, directors, writers who just wanna reduce risks of new plots, script, etc. They are really not much into bringing new ideas. The new "Don" really sucks. Shahrukh Khan is not capable enough to compete the roles played by The Great Amitabh Bachchan, and he must realise this now or he's gonna end up in a big mess of his career.

Producers will make movies as long as they are convinced they can make money. As soon as one remake becomes a hit, everyone wants to jump onto the bandwagon to grab a share of the pie.

look, there are 4 basic stories, all stories are modified or mix & match of either of the earlier. like life composits of some basic feelings - love-hate-hatred-happiness-sorrow, etc.. those who are remaking movies are more daring than others + they get free publicity also.
