From my Care Assistant days, what you're referring to is Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs. You can find a good bit of information on Maslow and his theory at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Maslow).

Along with your Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Spiritual needs, some would also include Spiritual (SPIES is a good acronym to remember it by).

There are no hard and fast rules as to what constitutes these needs, and where they lie for everyone, but some of the things that spring to mind are:

Spiritual - awareness of presence in the 'great scheme of things'.
Physical - food, water, air, warmth, sleep.
Intellectual - self-actualisation, prestige, acceptance, self-esteem, the need to acquire knowledge, understanding.
Emotional and Social - belonging (part of a group), the need to be needed, friends and companions, supportive friends and family, the knowledge that you are safe.

I'm sure that if you read about Maslow, you'll see where I'm coming from with my suggestions. I'm also sure that you'll be able to see that these needs, although common for all humans, differ at different times of a person's life and experience.

Search under "human development." Erikson has an interesting theory on the subject.
