I'm an equal opportunity answerer. If you ask a dumb question, I'm going to give you an equally dumb answer. But, if you ask a smart (intelligent) question, I will do my best to give you an honest intelligent answer in return. I do think that Yahoo should think of a way to screen answers though, I hate asking a question, and getting only two word answers in return.

You can make a lot of points quickly without offering substantial answers -- just by providing any sort of answer, voting your daily quota of best answers without regard to what you're voting for, etc.

It does show a lot of participation, but not much about the quality of participation, so I usually don't bother watching the "high score" listings anymore.

Yahoo staff know this. When they profile a featured user each week, they use a combination of traits of which overall points is but one element -- they also look at the percentage of best answers, review the quality of the answers, the category focus, and the kindness/maturity level of the answerer towards others.

So, yeah, maybe it would be nice for the quantity of points to accurately reflect the overall quality of the answerer, but it's difficult to create a system that handles all the possibilities.

I think people catch on after awhile who is just gaming for points, and who actually cares about the answers they give.

It depends on what your definition of a point scorer is. There are people on here who are at the higher levels who seem to take it pretty seriously and have very well thought out and intelligent questions and answers. Usually the people who answer with a simple yes or no are newbies or alter egos.

I disagree with u . Some of the point scorers have given some genuine and beautiful answers. They show empathy to the questioners, and don't judge.
Ofcourse, there are some rotten apples out there too, but i think ur being a bit harsh here.

It's usually the askers that show a great amount of stupidity. Generally I do my best to avoid those questions, but sometimes all people need is a yes or no opinion on something, which would therefore screw people over if there was a minimum word limit.

I, on the other hand, always do my best to provide meaningful and insightful answers so that I am able to help people, as that is what I am here to do.

It helps to promote my forum for those people that need advice and opinions on their problems and everyday questions without getting stupid replies from complete imbeciles. Speaking of which...Insert some shameless advertising here...

Other posters just answer with Yes or No. maybe just to get the 2 points. There should be a way that yahoo can screen answers so that there is a minimum number of characters/words per answer.

People will say what they want , how they want. some with lots of words, some with yes and no. There are some answers that have so many words that there answers are meaningless. All we can do is bring intergrity to the answers in our own words.

Okay, maybe you have a little too much time on your hands or you are taking this too seriously. You actually look at other people's questions and answers? Lighten up, dude.
