Yes, by amniocentesis, but they usually only do that with the higher risk pregnancies.

Yes amnio can find out the sex if you want to risk it.
however old wives tales are just that, occaisionally proven to beright but not all that often see below:
1st- If you are carrying high mostly likely a girl. If you are carrying low a boy
Then my 20 year old daughter who has had monthly mood swings and periods since she was 10 years old,
not to mention the "hottest booty on campus" as I've been told by a couple of guys who know her as well as the c cup bras she wears is a boy? I carried her WAY low, she was "centered" in the area around my navel and below the entire pregnancy.
3rd- the food you crave. In most cases if you crave chocolate or sweets is a girl and salty food its a boy.
I craved cucumber and tomato sandwiches with miracle whip, please see MY question above...
I wonder if I should wake her up and tell her she's really a boy?

Just by using old wives tales like
If the heart beats faster it is a boy
If the baby hangs lower it is something else
It has been a long time since I had children and do not remember them all - back in my day there were no scans except on a rare occassion

There are a few signs that aren't scientifically proven, but usually help give you an idea. These are signs that helped me know what my two children were.
1st- If you are carrying high mostly likely a girl. If you are carrying low a boy.
2nd- the color of area around your nipples. Darker its a boy and lighter its a girl.
3rd- the food you crave. In most cases if you crave chocolate or sweets is a girl and salty food its a boy.
4th- they can measure the amount of testrone in your blood most times, more means a boy. less a girl
5th- Faster heart beats are boys and slower girls.
There are a few more. They aren't proven, but things that I noticed different in my pregnancy and the same things with my friends who had children around the same time I did. Not 100% accurate, but neither is the ultrasound machine images.

I have found out the sex of my baby before my amniocentesis test by reading a Chinese birth chart which told me that I was having a boy. Then it was confirmed by my doctor after I had the amniocentesis test done.

If you mean without medical assistance the answer is no. I had lots of people telling me I was going to have a boy as my tummy was all out in front of me and not at all to the sides (which is suppose to mean something) and I had a girl. And for the heartbeat, her heartbeat was faster than avg.... There are no 'secret' ways of telling!

If the bump is large and it looks like the baby is @ the front, that can mean boy.
