AVG is excellent. It has been, in effect, 'blind tested' against all the top antivirus programs and it meets them all on equal terms. You can pay for a 'professional' AVG version, but for the ordinary user, like most of us here, the free version is superb. I and several colleagues have been using it for nearly five years now, and it has proven to be 100 percent effective. It scans e-mails incoming and outgoing, checks for viruses on boot up, does automatic updates every day, and the way it handles a virus is so simple and effective. Go for it - you will not regret your decision.

Of all the ones (paid and free) I've used, AVG is the best at keeping nasties out. The only drawback is running disk scans is VERY slow.
