You are absolutely right...I worked at an airline for 31 years and if the person in front of me was on a cell phone...I'd just say 'next in line please' and then smile and say that I was just giving them private time to finish their conversation...worked most of the time...I have also worked with people who came to a complete stop until the person had hung up...I may only have been a clerk but I deserved basic human respect.

In general, it should most definitely be avoided. However, sometimes it cannot be avoided. I always try not to be on the cell in public or if I am in public to just kind of find a corner somewhere where I won't bother anybody. However, I do remember one emergency call I had to take while in a line & I nodded to the clerk and was thankful he rang up my order. I was off the phone before the transaction was complete and was able to say "thank you" to the clerk. My point is that there can be a general rule of etiquette (like "no cell phones in the checkout"), but we must be gracious enough to allow exceptions.

No - I love my phone, usually. It does bug me when people use theirs the way you describe, but as you say, that's the way they use the technology and not the technology itself. I have mine fixed on one quiet ring only, so it doesn't intrude and I don't feel I have to answer if it doesn't suit me; I have assigned different ringtones for kids (which I would always answer) and everyone else (which I often don't). I often don't hear it ring at all, but can pick up the messages when it suits me. I do like the fact that I can contact someone quickly, or at least let them know I'm looking for them. I would always turn my phone to silent before meeting someone, and always before going to public meetings. I think it's really annoying if someone takes a call in the middle of a meeting with me, but I now just insist on all phones being switched off! I know for the last year or two that at least one mobile phone has gone off during every funeral I've been at - how the heck could you not remember to switch to silent before going to a funeral?? That strikes me as being rude in the extreme. It's only a leash if you let it be. On the whole, it gives more freedom than it takes, and I love it!

It's very rude, I've been in the line behind a person on a cell phone & was quite upset about it. The sales clerk couldn't do her job & was obviously distressed so...I left the line & found someone in management to deal with the customer.

It is.
Heck, 10 years ago, only a few people had "car phones" or "bag phones". NO conversation is that important that it can't wait. What I really hate is the people who walk around the store with their blue tooth having a conversation. I always think they are talking to them self.

It is very rude. I have been in places that have signs saying--Please do not talk on cellphone while you are being served. I think that's a good idea.

Your right, it's rude.
They should get off of the phone and speak to you.
I talk to them regardless, I make a point to have a conversation with them, while ringing them up.
Hope this helps.

You should not be so angry about it. When you are at work, you are at work. These people do not have any obligation to you. They DO NOT have to get off the phone, you, however do have to ring up their groceries and they deserve to have that done without attitude. Be as courteous as you can, always.
