£60 is a lot of money for an amel. (No offence but it's true.) I can get hold of snakes for £30 or less, so shop around a bit before you part with your money.

Have you looked up corn snake breeders? Breeders are, in general, a better bet than petshops. Pet shop snakes are often not in good condition and have a higher chance of habouring parasites and other illnesses. Also, a breeder can often give you much more information on a snake than a petshop can; since they raised the animal from birth, they can tell you how it's eating, shedding, who its parents were, exactly how old it is, etc. A snake in a pet shop could be anything from anywhere.

I'm not condoning all pet shops; two of my snakes were petshop buys. But as it happens, both were underweight and one was infested with mites, so I'm just saying; be careful. If you do go for a petshop buy (or any snake for that matter), always ask to handle the snake before you purchase. Make sure the animal is responsive and active, not limp. It should feel strong, even a baby, and offer resistance to your hands. The tongue should be flicking. There should be no old bits of shed skin stuck to the snake as this can be a sign of stress or bad husbandry. Also look carefully for snake mites, which are tiny parasites and are very hard to get rid of. They appear as tiny black or red specks and they are most often spotted around the head and tail, and tend to be more common around "nooks and crannies" of the snakes, such as in the groove under the chin.

Best of luck ;-)

dont go to a shop, they are expensive, sorry but its true.
check out "reptile forums uk" there are a few corn breeders on there and one of them has a sale on until sunday and is selling corns for £12, after sale they are £18.
He has been breeding corns for about 15 years and is very knowledgable.
