try and get it appraised first so you have some idea of it's value. Go to an antiques store and ask if they do such things or if they can give you some pointers into doing some research yourself.

Research the TV show Antiques Roadshow U.S., to find the name of their specialists in memorabilia (they have a few). Then go to one of their websites to see if you can find out the relative value of your item there, or perhaps to email them with photos.
