I can't honestly say how easy this is, but have you tried looking for old almanacs in the second-hand bookstores? It seems almanacs, like many other things, get put away by pack-rats like myself and turn up years later in second-hand books. That would be the easiest way if it works at all, since it is always easiest to just reach for a book.

If not, then I would try the Bureau of Statistics or The Commerce Department or something in the federal government which is responsible for statistics. They probably do have historical data back that far, because it's at least within the time that computers were sufficiently in use. And there are newspaper or news service archives you might check.

You know, we all need to educate ourselves in how to research. Wikipedia is usually my first choice, but I'm not sure how I would even word a question to them on this subject. Do we need a good web site tutorial in how to research?
