The President is the president and this fact does not diminish whatever his performance: real or perceived! Back to Bush, whatever the rest of Americans or the World thinks of him, I see him as one hero in the war against terror and entrenchment of freedom ever lived. I am convinced that history will be very kind to him for really standing up the way he did. No doubt the cost has been enormous, but just imagine what the world would have been after 9/11 without the actions he took, rightly or wrongly!

Your question intrigued me and I thought I'd do a bit of research. I found the US government website information on state funerals (check the source below) which gave the following:

'According to U.S. law, former presidents, presidents-elect, and presidents are entitled to state funerals with the formal honor of lying in state in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, the seat of the Congress. Funeral details vary according to the wishes of the families.'

It uses the words 'entitled to state funerals' this would lead me to believe they are not automatic, nor compulsory given the above text.

Whether Bush deserves a state funeral I guess is a question in itself. In my humble opinion a man who has done such damage and caused so much fear in his own country should not be given priviledges held for men and women of honour who have done the country much good.

A president is entitled to a state funeral, however, the wished of the family take precedence. If the family or even the president himself did not want a state funeral, that would prevail. It is optional, not mandatory.

You might be confusing the man with the office. While agreeably Bush is the worst President in American history, the office of the President is still a position of honor, and the officeholder, good or bad, deserves the ceremonial burial associated with the office. Better to impeach him then to deny worms a gormet meal.

Whooo, must of walked into a lib chat room or something.

All presidents get a state funeral. You thing ol Billy Bob Clinton deserves one after getting impeached and molesting poor interns under the desk at the oval (or in his case "the oral") office. Did you forget all the Marines that got killed in Mogadishu Somalia when ol Billy Bob thought he was gonna be the next great Southern Confederate General. What a cluster-fu&% that was.

If it is an office priviledge then he should get one. Sadly Iraq, and Afghanistan will remain the only things to remember him by. I still think of Clinton as the one who could not deal with Al-Qaeda and left it for Bush because he was busy with Monica.

No, it's not compulsory but as President he is entitled to one. Though it seems unlikely, he may stipulate in his will that he does not wish to be buried with full state honours.

While I do not agree with Bush on most of his policy and how he runs everything, that doesn't mean I think he shouldnt be intitled to his rights. Yes, many disagree with him, but many disagreed with Nixion and Clintion and there going to be buried with a state fueral just like Regan.

He is relatively young and I would assume the event is some 40 years from now.
It is not compulsory.
A President's first job is protecting this country and George Bush does more than you will ever know to keep you safe.
