Jack Nicholson portrayed the role of J. J. "Jake" Gittes in the films: 1974's CHINATOWN and the 1990's THE TWO JAKES.
Chinatown was an exquisite short story about a mood, and a time, and a couple of guys who are blind-sided by love," as Jake finds himself at the top of the heap, professionally speaking, the "leper with the most fingers." It tells a private detective investigating an adultery case stumbles on to a scheme of murder that has something to do with water. It was directed by Roman Polanski featuring many elements of the film noir genre, particularly a multi-layered story that is part mystery and part psychological drama. The movie won several high-profile awards, including an Academy Award in 1975 for Best Writing and Original Screenplay for Robert Towne. Other stars include Faye Dunaway, and John Huston. The film has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
Chinatown was the first part of a planned trilogy written by Robert Towne about J.J. Gittes and L.A. Because this film was the first of a planned trilogy, Jack Nicholson turned down all detective roles he was offered so that the only detective he played would be Jake Gittes. Jake Gittes was named after Jack Nicholson's friend, producer Harry Gittes.
The second part of a planned trilogy written by Robert Towne about J.J. Gittes and L.A. was the crime/drama/mystery movie "The Two Jakes" directed by Nicholson himself and released by Paramount Pictures on August 10, 1990, which is the sequel to the 1974 movie Chinatown. The story revolves on Jake Gittes investigating adultery, murder, and the money that comes from oil. The story dealt on the natural gas business in Los Angeles in the 1940s. The film was neither a box office nor a critical success .This film's commercial and critical failures cuttled plans to make Cloverleaf as the third part of the trilogy.♥

Good morning!
The Two Jakes: Los Angeles 1948: private eye Jake Gittes shall convict the client Jake Berman's wife of adultery. But instead of making her a scene like planned, Berman shoots her lover in affect - or was it murder? Gittes is surprised when he learns that the dead was Berman's companion, who now inherits his share of the company. Of course the police doesn't believe it was affect and suspects Gittes too. The dead lover's widow manages to force Gittes into investigating against his own client... The trace leads back to an old case in Chinatown.
The Two Jakes is the sequel to the 1974 movie Chinatown. Directed by and starring Jack Nicholson, it co-starred Harvey Keitel, Meg Tilly, Madeleine Stowe, and Richard Farnsworth. Gittes near the end of his life (the first film dealt with a young Jake, the second with a middle-aged Jake) have at this time been abandoned.
