The muck is the pile of folded card or burn cards. Once you've your cards touch the much your hand is considered dead or unplayable. To muck your cards is to fold your hand with out showing by throwing them into the muck.

when you lose, you can 'muck' your hand of cards - meaning that you choose not to show the other players what you had

this is usefull if you dont want people to start to see a pattern when you are bluffing etc
