There is no thing called The H.G.V. anymore, it is the L.G.V. You can go straight to the Long Good Vehicles straight away. you don't even need a car licence, you just drive under instruction with L and LGV learner plate. but I would not recommend this way. Have your full licence and then go fora good instruction course with a articulated Vehicle (semi) since you will need the same for rigid and trailer. since we came on line with European licence's many years ago. I was driving these and coaches since 18. I Did mine with the R.A.F. Wish you luck I have driven these trucks for 30 years. and they have sure improved. so easy now. but not so much pleasure driving on our roads now.or with the deadlines time tables, mobile phones, and with the eastern block in Europe they will drive for little pay. that is killing the industry. so think long and hard, if you want to drive as a profession, It is no joy, only if you can have your own truck, then you need a C.P.C. to run your own business. this all costs and the LGV is a costly licence to have and keep up. a lot of responsibility

You used to be able to take your class 1 H.G.V.(now called L.G.V.) straight away as your main licence. The rules have now changed and the set up is The car licence first, then you take the class 2 L.G.V test, after this you have to take the class 1 test. You have to be 21 years of age before you can take your class 1/2. although there used to be a scheme where you could take the tests at 18, but I'm not sure if they scrapped it?

isnt HGV class 1 and class 2? think you might be confused.
a class 2 licence is a HGV class 2 licence and same for class 1.
yes you have to do 2 before you can do 1. 2 is rigid trucks and class 1 would be artic and low loaders etc. good luck! ring the MOT and find out from them what you need to do.
