The ad lib was Chubby Brown, but there is a common mis-conception that the first 'Who the F is Alice' was Smokie. It wasn't. It was an old Dutch rocker called Pieter Koelewijn and the released record was live in a boozer in Nijmegen. I think that the group went under the name of Gompie, or similar. (me and my anorak!)

I think it was Roy Chubby Brown who did the "Alice" one but he stole it from an earlier version called "Living Next Door to Allan" which had completely different lyrics:

when the smoke had cleard a voice said
