There are approximately 616,500 words in the modern English language, and if you add on words that are English but haven't been used for 100s of years that number can grow to around 750,000. There is also an estimated 500,000 words that are only used in the scientific community that are technically English.

As far as the language part of the English language, an average educated person knows about 20,000 words and uses about 2,000 words in a week.
