They won't stink your house out if ytou clean their cage at least once a week. However, they are one of the mustilidae family of animals which have little musk glands on their flanks which do exude a musky smell. Most people hardly notice any smell from them and it is only a filthy cage and bedding which will stink.

I took 3 Hamsters home from Biology class. They wash and groom. They leave rice-sized pellets. The stink is relatively less than our much larger leavings. They can't balance well on the rim of the toilet, so, you must pick up after them. Give a hamster a tissue and watch him tear it and make a nest. Hand him sunflower seeds and watch him stuff his cheeks. Don't bounce him, because you could launch him and hurt or kill him. Get him a rolly ball. Don't expect him to make friends with a cat.

They sure do. I used to breed them and cleaned them out very regularly but they still smell. I had a purpose built outhouse for this very reason. The hamsters themselves are not too bad so long as they are healthy but the cage will smell. Don't feed them lettuce or dark greens either as they will get "wet tail" and could die. It's very unpleasant, causes loose stools.

They can smell a little if you don't clean them.
If you clean the cage thoroughly once a week, they won't smell.
