Bullies are often defeated by someone standing up to them, without having to actually hit them. Often just the "I'm not afraid of you" stance of an intended victim is enough. Also, stating your best form of retaliation is sometimes effective. Much depends on the circumstances, but I have often found that people who bully are actually quite cowardly. They bluster about how tough they are in the hopes that they will be believed, and not challenged. They put in the first punch because they don't figure they will get a second. They want to hurt you before you hurt them, not realizing that the entire exchange of hurts is not necessary.
Most of them are quite ignorant, and what they fear most is being out-smarted. If you make it clear to them that you will not engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed man, you can face them down without loss of face to them, and that's all they need. If, on the other hand, you TELL him you will not engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed man, understand that when you challenge a bully's intelligence, you challenge his fists which are so active precisely because he is challenged by intelligence. If, instead, you make it clear that you are NOT challenging him, but merely want to be left in peace, you may never have to lift a finger.
But sometimes you do have to lift a finger. Learn to do it well.

I'm happy you've added the post script: "without ever raising a finger???" Yes... most definitely we can beat the bully by a number of means and all non violent. It takes time, patience & wisdom but respect of oneself and love of others will carry the most determined to beat the most trunctulant bully. Both the bully and the one beating back the bully will win. We come out winners.

Yes, it is the inner strength that the bully can never win over, of a person. If we are strong enough inside, the bully can never get the satisfaction/feeling of having won over us, what ever the situation.

Depends the bully, some aren't detered by any means. Winner is also a loose term, depends what your trying to win vs. what the bully is trying to win, it might end up win win or lose lose.

This is very difficult. Better keep on mentioning that the bully was "asked to leave" the Oxford University in 1969 after "allegedly'' raping a female student, and that he ''allegedly'' did so over and over again (to Juanita Broderick, for example).

Absolutely! I have experienced this myself so I know it works. Just send them love . It seems to cause a slight paralysis while you calmly walk away.
