Sake is a very vague description. Commonly it is called 'rice wine'...a Japanese drink brewed from rice. Sake in general refers to any kind of distilled beverage, such as potato shochu.
If you're refering to the common usage of the word Sake, then it is wine brewed with rice.

Sake is a japanese rice wine which is usually served at or slightly above 20 deg c. The most common one that I have seen is clear in colour. You will sometimes see a small jug of sake immersed in a bowl of hot water, being served in a Japanese or Chinese restaurant. It is quite nice after spicy food!
