Was and probably always will be in number one position but there are many great players today. Impossible to say who is the best at any one time.

I dont think Pele is the greatest "footballer" in the world, maye the greatest attacker in the world but certainly not footballer. There have been many great players but would Pele have been just as great if he had to play at left back. A great player needs to be able to play in lots of positions and not just score lots of goals although this can be useful!!

Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson, Muhamad Ali or Mike Tyson, Senna or Schumaher, Bobby Fisher or Kasparov...... they were all kings of their time!!! People don't like Maradona because of two things, his drug addiction and '' Hand of God'', but there is no doubt about Maranona's skills !!!

In 2000, while Napoli retired the number 10 jersey in his honour, FIFA conducted an poll on the Internet, to find the Player of the Century. Maradona, with 53.6% of the votes, was a clear winner. Then, in a previously unannounced move, FIFA appointed a "Football Family" committee, which voted to elect Pelé to the title. Two awards were made, one to each of the pair: Maradona accepted his prize, but left the awards ceremony without waiting to see Pelé receive his accolade.(wikipedia)

People have chose Maradona to be the best, not FIFA!!!!

And here is something about Pele's 1281 goals ''record''.....

Waste of 5 points. Pele is only one of the best footballers in the world. There can't be any best footballer in the world.

Let's see he's a three time world cup champion, he has over a 1,000 goals in his career, he changed the game of football to what it is today, i would say by far he is the greatest footballer in the world, there's no one with stats like him, during his time, there was no one that could stop him, you dont see that in todays game, oh yeah they could stop him, they would intentionally hurt him, Pele Changed football, made the game more exciting, and just for that he is the best......

I love Pele and Brazilian players, But I still think Pele is not the greatest player!
He is one of the greatest But I think Maradona beats him.
Our generation didnt see Pele play, so we just have to go by the records he had. But we have seem Diego Maradona Play!
Zidane play, and Rivaldo Play!

So ma answer is, MAy be not the best, but one of the best!

The word "is" implies the present tense...and I hate to be the one to break it to you but Pele no longer plays competitive football.

But, yes...he was one one of the best footballers ever. Today it would be a toss-up between the likes of Ronaldinho, Raul, Buffon and those types of guys. I dare say CRESPO <3 <3 <3 is in the running too...

No, Diego Maradona is, but you'll find a lot of English people won't acknowledge Maradona because of the "Hand Of God" incident in 1986, sad really because on individual skill Pele gets nowhere near Maradona.

Well, he WAS. And better than the so-called great Brazilian players - who did so indifferently in the last World Cup - around at the moment. He also composes himself better as a person than say George Best or "bad boys" like Maradona, Zidane or Cantona
