I have got a set of questions which I asked lots of people and now i need to calculate the averages for each answer. Each question had a scoring system 1-6, with 1 beeing poor, and 6 being excellent. The way I have tryed working this out is by taking the point from each question- adding that up, and then dividing the total by 6. However i am coming up with answers like 17.3 etc. I need to calculate so that my answer is between 1 and 6.
Many thanks for your help!

Assume the answers went like this

1 (rating)
2
3
4
5
6

Total= 21

21/6 ( number of responses)=3.5

Your average answer was 3.5

Try another

2

Total=26

26/6=4.33

with averages u need to add up all the answers together then divide by how many people u asked.

Example

The average of any set of quantities can be found by adding all the numbers together then dividing by the number of quantities in the set.

i.e. average = total of quantities / number of quantities

e.g. A darts player throws the following scores during a match:
80, 100, 62, 180, 21, 58

Her average score per throw = (80 + 100 + 62 + 180 + 21 + 55) ÷ 6 = 83

Average = 83.

First of all tryed is spelt tried. Second of all, why are you dividing by 6? After adding all the scores, divide by the number of answers you got for that question. So if you've got 12 answers for one question and the scores are marked 1 to 6, add them together and divide by 12.

Rather than dividing by six I think you need to divide by the total number of questions you asked (assuming they were all scored in a similar manner). That should give a value between 1 and 6.

Are you calculating correctly? If you are doing this on a calculator, you must = before you divide. Add all the values, and equal them. Then divide by how many there are. If that doesnt work, post the numbers here for some one slse to try to work out. Good luck

Why are you dividing by 6? You need to divide by the number of questions.

Divide the total points for each question by the number of persons to whom you asked that question

you divide the total by the number of answers you have. if you asked 22 people, you divide the total by 22

add all the scores together and divide by the number of people who answered.

if 5 people answered 2,6,4,6,1

then 19/5=3.8
