When we married my wife had dog + cat & brought them into the marriage. I adore my wife and I've tolerated the animals so far, my complaints being they stink up the house, the cat claws furniture, their vet bills have been high, and kenneling/shipping them has cost a small fortune. We have a secluded yard so they spend a lot of time outdoors, pleasing me (and them).

We're moving to a large city where apts are tiny. I can't stand the thought of living in close quarters w/the cat; jumping on the bed at night, meowing for food at 4:00 am, the litter box, etc.

I'm staying mum on the subject but would love it if my wife brought up the idea of giving up the cat. Nothing yet. How can I bring up the subject with her? (I've tried & she gets upset, she's an animal activist) What if I offered someone $1000 to take the cat? It's worth it to me, I've spent that much w/1 vet visit. We have a baby, cats & babies are incompatible & I hoped that would prompt her but nothing yet. Help!!

Explain to her about the situation, and I think she knows that the new place is smaller. She has to give away her pets even she is an activist but she has to 'pay attention' to things that is not comfy for husband, and for her too.I don't know how to explain in good english but if she's a good wife, she'll understand what is good for you and her.
And if she didnt agree to give away her cat,you could give her a 'warning',like, you love me more or your cat? something like that

Hey, sorry, but I am with your wife on this one! She had the dog and cat when you married her! If you objected, you should have brought it up BEFORE the marriage, not now. It isn't fair to her to have to give up her pets just because you don't like them.

Keep dry food and water out for the cat at all times, and it won't be waking you up at 4am meowing for food. And it's untrue that babies and cats are incompatible. It's good for a child to grow up with pets. Teaching a child to be kind to animals, makes him/her a kinder person to people, too.

I guess I would try to compromise. A small dog? It's too bad you don't like cats as they are perfect pets for small places and are easily trained to use a scratching post. But please don't expect her to have no pets; that's asking a lot from a pet lover. If she's totally unwilling to adopt out either of the pets try wooing the cat. If you woo it, it will respond to you and, who knows, you might come to love it...it's happened before. Get a scratching post, put dry food and water out at night, or all day and keep it inside. And subscribe to Cat Fancy magazine for one year to learn about your wife's cat. And, if you're worried about the baby, keep the cat out of the baby's room when the baby is sleeping. Otherwise, there's no reason to think that babies and cats are incompatible.

That's a hard one - I too am a dog lover although never inside and never a cat. As she is a animal activist you really have no way of talking her out of the pets. Maybe if you moved into an apartment block that didn't allow pets??? that way you would have to find them a new home??

Good Luck

If you dont own the apartment you are moving into get the owner to ban having pets if you cant do that buy an aquarium with small fish the cat will be attracted to the fish and if your wife is animal activist she may get rid of the cat and let you keep the fish.Goodluck.

Make an agreement with her that she can keep the cat until it dies,of natural causes that is, but no new ones unless you move back to the country. Then just keep on loving your wife no matter what decision she makes.

Cats and babies are not incompatible. Why can't you learn to love her pets too if you love her. It's unthinkable for her to give up her pets. Don't even think about it or mention it. Afterall she is the one taking care of them, not you.

maybe you guys could try to train your pets to be outdoor pets. or you could try setting up a doggy [kitty] door that allows them access to only one room in the house.
