I just put our 9-mo old baby down for a nap. He usually falls right asleep, and naps make him feel better & keep him calm the rest of the day. Usually takes 2 naps during the day, one at 10:00 am next at 2:30 pm. However, today he cries in his crib because he doesn't want to nap.

Is it better to give up on the nap & pick him up? Or let him cry some and fall asleep eventually?

I know the nap will make him feel better the rest of the day. But I read in a book that you "should always respond immediately and completely to your baby's crying". I don't want to neglect him into another Dahmer, but then again will some crying and ignoring by me really hurt him? (Plus I need some time to shower, straighten up the house, etc.) I'm very confused, advice is so conflicting.

This is our 1st baby and have had no problems with him, he is a delight.

when my daughter was a bit younger than that she had had colic so bad if she didnt want to nap i had no other choice but to get her up otherwise she would scream till she puked. by the time she out grew it around 7 months i was sleep deprived and going through postpartum depression and i would let her cry herself to sleep just to show her she wasnt gonna get away with it n e more. needless to say it worked she would cry herself to sleep and get up in a great mood. she is now 2 1/2 and on occasion she still does it but the out come is really good it made her lungs strong and she wakes up happy and her naps are usually about 3 1/2 4 hrs long because she wears herself out crying so shes exhausted which leads to longer naps more time for u to shower pick up or take a nap if your tired. good luck

Is he teething? The pain of that might be stopping him from getting to sleep.
I think that you should do what you have to do-if you have to take five minutes out to have a shower, do that, but if you feel more comfortable with letting him out of the cot and play, do that. If you are going to feel bad about letting him cry, why put yourself through the stress?

Personally, I would forget the nap and grab a shower next time he sleeps, but that's just what I would do.

It is possible he is ready for just one sleep per day. Try putting him down at 11.30. Give him something to eat at 11 so he isn't going to wake up hungary. He may also just be testing you. Babies are smart little creatures. Which would you rather...sleep in a bed in a room away from mum or to be held by mum ..if you were a baby. A little bit of crying is ok. Go in in 1 min. reasure him (don't pick up) then go back in 2 min, then 3 min, continue going back every 3 min till he settles. This will reasure him you are still around but lets him know at the same time you are not going to pick him up and take him out of his room

His crying could mean he has an ear infection, he is teething, he has a tummy ache. If when you respond he shows none of these signs leave him in his crib. He isnt' going to turn into another Jeffrey Dahlmer because you leave him in his crib. This is NOT neglect. I suggest you toss out all of the books and parent your child yourselves instead of allowing the books to do the job for you.

maybe he has an ear infection that aches when he is laid down, try getting him to sleep in a carrier, or in an upright position, or try tylenol...is he running a fever? maybe you should take him to doctors...although, children usually grow out of two naps and into one longer (actually nicer) nap in mid afternoon right around this age so it might be nothing to worry about! Trust and follow your instincts, no one knows your child as well as you do, no author or doctor even.

Let him cry.It won't hurt him.I have 4 kids and it never hurt them.
As long as you know he is not hurt or sick and doesn't need changing or fed,he will be fine.It is never good to mess up a baby's routine.
