your sub-vocal thoughts, they are non vocalized references to the imprinting of language, which ever one(s)you know, upon your cognitive abilities as a human being. You can day dream, but what in the hell are dreams while your sleeping???.... does your inner monalogue surface while your sleeping, it must manifest itself during your sleep, for where would you get the images and environments and subsequent memories of those dreams from?
The imposing nature of this, is truthfully uncontrollable; unless a computer hacked into human cognition/brains and manipulated them.

The waking monologue is self controlled by our concerns and aspirations for our lives. The imaginative nature of that thought process is related to the degree of personality variances we choose to travel to. Our dream state is an uncontrolled conglomeration of our experiences and imaginations based on visual and intellectual stimulations from our environment and our mind, very often based on stimulations within the preceding week that sometimes connect with deep far off memories.

When your rational thinking and information processing has shut down this leaves the imagination free to roam aimlessly and wonder into dimensions of twisted reality. Hence the dream state. Let's just call it a vacation for the brain.
