A friend of mine will be graduating in December with a MFA in Filmmaking. He already has a BA in Film. Anyway I was thinking of getting him a gag gift, one of those Dummies books, "Filmmaking for Dummies." Do you think he will get offended especially since he spent 7 years learning how to make films? By the way he is a very serious guy.

Better play it safe if he's the serious type, and come up with another gift idea. Besides, you know it's not a good idea if you're asking a bunch of strangers.

Hmmmm, that might be a slap in the face. You might make him a funny video. If you can get a camera with a free CD, it has the software on it to do these. It is a throw away camera, but get the one that says "free CD", Walgreen's sells them. Anyway, you can edit, and create a music video and put hats and different things on the person, also put comments, etc. I did it for my granddaughter's birthday and it turned out real well. It has diff. music you can chose from. It is only about $10. Take pictures of him doing diff. things and don't let him know that is what you are going to do. You have to take it in to get the pictures developed, but when you get the pictures back, you can get the free CD, there is a coupon inside the box the camera comes in. They are really creative. You could do it in one day, as they have one hr. developing. You have to buy the camera in their camera dept., but it is on sale now for only $5.95. I have done two music videos. Be sure you have a theme, or a story of some sorts with the pictures. Could be "Jack and his Private Live", or "Jack and his friends", and the pictures could be just not posing, but or some could be, I don't know you can figure it out.

Not knowing your friend, does he have a good sense of humor? Does he like to joke around? If so, you could put a note on it saying "Just thought you might be able to use a good reference book!" or something to that effect. If not, I wouldn't do it. He might be offended, and you don't want that.

I think shardf had a good suggestion.

Or this is what I did for a friend who was moving away. I took pictures of some of her friends and put them in a small photo album--the kind that holds 4x6 pics. I also took pics of a couple of places where we all hung out a lot. And I had some pics of some parties where she had been to. She really appreciated that I had taken the time to do that, and said it was so much fun to be able to look at all her friends when she was gone from here.

You will be able to think of something! Sounds like he is going to have a very interesting career!

Get hold of a camcorder & make a short film of yourself (& if

possible some of his other mates) congratulating his success I
bet he keeps the tape longer than the book, and hey , he might see your acting potential and put you in the next blockbuster

I think it's pretty funny, as long as you do something really nice for him to let him know how happy and proud you are at his accomplishment. He's worked hard to get where he is, let him know how proud you are as his friend for his graduation.
