Some people are born with this condition. They truly feel sorry for the person who fell, even if they got hurt, but they can't help themselves, they have this impulse to laugh. Sometimes they truly try hard not to laugh because the person got hurt and to laugh would make them targets for other people who are around, but the impulse is there, they can't help it. I know a person who has this condition, she is truly a very nice person and although she laughs, in her heart she feels for the person who had the accident. She has laughed at me numerous times.

Because we unconciously believe that each and every person is capable of supporting themselves, whether physically, mentally, or in a relationship. Watching them fall gives us a sense of relief that people are indeed mortal and flawed and sometimes we falter. We laugh to let down our guard and breathe a sigh of relief.

Because it's unexpected. Think the laugh is a knee-jerk reaction, like a quick intake of breath, a scream, or a shudder.

They're laughing because it's not *them* who's fallen. It's called schadenfreude (I think)
