Basically the mantle is divided into 2 parts: the upper mantle (connected to the crust = the lithosphere) and the lower mantle (asthenosphere). The upper mantle tends to be both cooler and more solid; the lower mantle hotter and more plastic. Hot melted rock rises from the lower mantle, cools, gets mixed with materials from the crust, especially at subduction zones, and sinks again. Convection is the process of rising and falling due to heat differences, so you could say the convection process is occuring at some point throughout the whole mantle.
