I thought maybe it was the dark, so I got toys that light up so he could see, but it didn't work. Even driving with the over head light on does not seem to calm him down. It wouldn't be so bad if I didnt have to do any night time driving, but that is just inevitable! Any suggestions?

not really much you can do about it, eventually he will see that your there with him and once his sense of security kicks in he will be okay. good luck. maybe give him a flash light to play with and keep reassuring him

Try playing peek-a-boo a few times before taking off. While you are in the front seat, turn around and let your son see your face for a few minutes before driving away. Baby might just be afraid you aren't there since he can't see you in the dark.

Talk to baby while driving. Say hi, sing, etc. Also, try getting a tape of kids' songs and sing along. Maybe a DVD might keep him occupied. You can keep some toys up front and pass them back to baby for some interaction. They also make a steering wheel you can attach to car seat so baby can make believe he is driving like you!

Also, let baby start strapping himself in every time you get in car. Say "Good boy!". Make sure you check to see he really clicked belt in or listen for click when he is older.

Go outside at night a few times and carry your kid around a little, point to the moon, let him get used to seeing you in the dark. You can also ask baby to find the moon while you are driving, make the evening seem beautiful.

Hope I've helped. Mom Power !

My son is 7 1/2 months old and Has always cried in the car seat. His is because of gas though. Maybe your son is getting gas from something He/you are eating, and when He's strapped into a car seat, He can't move around to ease it. Gas is usually worse at night too. (not sure why.) Just be sure that if he sounds like he's in pain, to pull over as soon as you can to get him out. Maybe he just needs to move around a bit.
it's true you don't want to teach him that crying gets him out of the car, But if you just let him suffer, He may feel abandoned, or scared to get back in the car seat, or to let you go.
Good luck with the sweetie!

Try putting your hand on his leg and singing to him. U'd be surprised how much it calms them just to hear your voice!
