My daughter is only thirteen but she would like to get green contacts, is she too young? How long do they last?

The only reason a child of 13 should be given contact lenses is if her sight needs correction and even then glasses would be better. If it is for sight correction tinted lenses would make no difference. Using contacts can create a whole range of eye problems some of which can cause permanent damage to the eyes. Any way how much of an overindulgent parent are you to even consider such a request from a child - who runs your house?

hmmm... honestly, when i was 13 I was also wearing color contacts. I am now 25, and was just told my by optomistrist that I am in the beginning stages of glaucoma. Its probably not directly the cause of me wearing contacts, but I always cant help to wonder. I would say that if her vision is perfect, as was mine, not to wear them. If she needs contacts to help with her vison, then why not add a little color...?

There are ALL KINDS of contacts, that last for all different periods of time. That would be something that should be discussed with ur optomitrist...

My daughter had color contacts at her age. The opthamologist said that we needed to make sure she has good hygene habits before allowing her to use contacts. You can get a bad eye infection if you're not careful. My daughter did fine, had only one infection, and is still wearing contacts five years later. The color contacts we purchased were good for 2 weeks only.

Maybe she just wants to try? I'd say, why not? But make sure she's really responsible & really careful when she has them on. IMO it's safer this way, because if we insist that she can't try, she might buy ones without your knowledge & it's really unsafe to put on lenses for the first time without adult's supervision.. :)

BTW it's really fun to have coloured lenses on, as they really change the way you look! Well sometimes you'll look funny wearing certain colours, and sometimes you'll look really gorgeous; but whichever, it's fun!

It is a parental decision, if you think your daughter is responsible enough to take care of them then I would say it is up to you to decide. My daughter is 13 as well, although she doesn't need corrective lenses, I would let her, but she would have to earn the money to buy them herself being as they are not standard lenses.

there are all sorts of eye diseases you can get,
including one where blood vessels start growing in the clear lens of your eye--all from wearing contact lenses

so, it's not a good idea to do it just for vanity
say NO!
