My University Professor admitted that he is a Communist.

Now I am left wondering what to do about it.

Communism in the USA is either illegal, or very close to it. It is a very taboo and hated.

I don't think it should be in the schools. It has no place in the schools.

Yet, this Professor is very proud to be a Communist, and is highly likely to be resistant to change.

Thus, I am stumped as of right now.

What would do about this stubborn commie?

It's not illegal. America's a free country and he's entitled to whatever political views he likes. There's also free speech, so he can talk about it as much as he wants.

There's nothing for you TO do. I assume you'd like to be entitled to your political views and opinions and to be allowed to voice them? Then you'll have to give him the same courtesy. No matter how much you may disagree with his views.

Communism is not illegal in the US, and has not been since the witch hunts during the McCarthy era. So if you think that your professor’s politics are wrong drop the class. Also, I’m just curious, did he say he was a communist or socialist because these are two very different styles of government. Communism, as it was applied, in the USSR was closer to a totalitarian dictatorship than true socialism. Socialism, on the other hand, is closer in scope to a true democracy wherein people have greater say in government and capitol is distributed much more evenly among all citizens instead of flowing upward into the pockets of major corporations. As a result of the more equitable distribution of wealth the standard of living tends to be much higher in countries with a more socialist style of government. Sweden has arguably the highest standard of living in the world…Can you guess what style of government they employ.

PS. I hope you were being sarcastic when you asked this question.

ccdavis01 is right. Communism is just another political view. It is DEFINITELY not illegal, although there was the "Red Scare" in the mid-1900s when many innocent Communists were arrested or executed in some cases because of the government's fear of Communist countries. There is nothing wrong with your professor being a Communist - he just has different views than you do. And like ccdavis01 said, there are some aspects of Communism that are good - Communism is overall a nice idea, but it just more or less doesn't work.

I think it's ignorant of you to think that communism is illegal in the US. If the US is a democracy like it has prided itself to be for decades, any sort of ideology should be allowed. Just like a capitalist taking pride in his/her ideals, a communist who does the same should not be prosecuted. I don't know what college that you attend, or how did you even get into a college with those kind of thinking, but that's definitely not in accordance of a college's goal in educating its students. Instead of pondering about what to do with a communist professor, take this as an opportunity to learn critical thinking. And, as a college student, you should also know that any kind of ideology is allowed in the US because it is a democracy in practice. As long as the group doesn't harm the people physically or something, it will not be prosecuted.

First of all, Communism is definately not illegal in the United states, but it is true that it is very taboo and widely hated.

However, just because your teacher is a communist, doesn't mean that this will affect his teaching ability. Communism is simply a choice, and in theory it isn't all that bad.

Now, I'm not saying that you should believe in Communism, but at least take his viewpoint into consideration. Maybe you should sit down and talk to him about why this makes you uncomfortable.

Does it matter? It's not illegal to be a communist. You can be an open member of that party if you want to. They can even run for office. I don't even belive it to be that taboo either. So you belive the government should have a bigger influence over our lives. We're already pretty close to being socialist, communism is just one step over.

Why would your proffesor, being communist, be any more resistant to change than another person? As long as he performs his duties as a proffesor to a decent degree, it's fine.

I'm quite aware of the irony of my name for this subject. If it helps to know, it has to relation. >.>

He's completely entitled to his belief and opinion. The principles of communism is good; it's based on creating equality. However, the true equality is not possible due to the fact of human nature. I am just a bit better than you, why would I want to be equal with you. I want to be recognized to be better than you.

So, communism will never prevail like the capitalism, which is really based on competition.

You tell me. What's better? Equality versus competition.

I know one thing. The idea of equality fails, and therefore, capitalism prevails.

It's a good idea, but just doesn't work.

You have to remember that you live in a free country in which people are free to have their own thoughts or political ideas. Communism is not illegal in the U.S.
I live in Canada which many visiting Americans call "mildly socialist." Socialist being another word for communist. Socialism/communism comes in varying degrees just as capitalism does. Your prof probably doesn't subscribe to the extreme type of communism such as that of the old Soviet Union in which people's individuality was compromised. He may be a proponent of the type of socialism that exists in Canada. The socialism which supports a system in which everyone is helped out by one another. For example, health care. In Canada, health insurance is mandatory.
It is cheap because it is mostly govt funded and if you have a low-income then you don't have to pay at all.
Try not to lay victim to the U.S. propanganda machine and base your opinions and actions on research and knowledge.

This is America isn't it? The land of the free? Everyone should have the freedom of speech and the freedom of our own point of view. If your professor is persecuted for his beliefs then we are all hypocrites.

Besides, he probably supports the positive parts of communism: everyone shares, nobody starves, the government takes care of you.

Democracy is great, but it only works when we do not persecute other people.

Can you get transferred to another class ? I would not like to know if my teacher had such extreme beliefs....in the past few years all we hear on the news are the profs. who preach preach preach to their students about their beliefs....but we as "free thinkers" do not have to believe their ways. It's the same as when I was in this art school many of the teachers were from the 60's hippie generation..nothing wrong with that but they had their own views on faith and much more about society....that we all had to put up with....but we left them and their ideas in the classroom....along with our art supplies when class was over. As you get older you'll meet people along the way with a zillion different views on life and everything connected with it. But we are free to think as we please so just distance yourself mentally from whoever tries to push their views on you as if you have to accept them. Good luck...Mama Jazzy Geri
