You don't need to stay away from anything in particular, other than certain medications and recreational drugs, unless your child has an allergy to something you ate. This is pretty uncommon though.

There are situations where mom must eliminate several types of food from her diet in order for her child to thrive. While rare, it is a very real problem. The biggest culpret is dairy. I gave up dairy from my diet (all sources, including everything from pre-prepared foods) because my daughter had blood in her stools. Once I gave up the dairy, the blood disappeared. Today she is healthy and happy at 2 years old, and is no longer allergic to dairy. I was very careful that she not get dairy products until she was well over a year old.

the foods you SHOULD eat are the basic food pyramid, vitamins, and lots of water.
If you baby has no gas or other digestive problems, stay away (or be sparing) from alcohol, caffeine, and smoked foods. I they do have digestive issues or allergies that is a whole other question. Here's something from the link at the bottom....

Dear New Mom,

Stay away from garlic,onions, pepper, anything that is spicy. You must eat very plain and simple with a newborn. Baby's digestive system is very new and has to get used to certain foods. You may be able to eat broccoli.

Anything you eat or drink will be felt by the baby approximately 4 to 6 hours later. So don't have caffenine or any food you aren't sure about after 4 PM if you want your baby to start sleeping through the night or be comfortable in the evening.

You can test some foods by eating them around lunch time or earlier and see how your baby reacts 4 to 6 hours later. Baby should eventually outgrow sensitivity to garlic, onions, etc. You'll have to be the judge and the guide.

Drink a full glass of water with every nursing you do. Make sure you drink a glass of milk every day. Around 3 months, you can start to drink a beer every evening if you wish. The hops are good for the baby, and relaxing for you, and it won't hurt baby at bedtime.

If you feel baby ever has gas, you should eat a few leaves of fresh fennel. Try dipping it in oil and vinegar with a dash of salt, yummy. It alleviates tummy ache even for adults. You can eat it everyday if you want to.

Very important... don't drink diet soda or eat pre-made foods as they have too many chemicals. Avoid MSG. Avoid cold cuts as they have nitrates. Read labels. If there is a Trader Joe's near you, you can find organic foods and pre-made items with no preservatives or chemicals. You really should make most of your own food from scratch and keep it simple. This will also help train you for when baby can start having solids, you can grind or chop many of these simple foods when baby is older.

Wash all your fresh fruits and vegetables with soap and water. Rinse well. Try to buy organics.

You can eat oatmeal, farina, cereals, eggs, pancakes, etc.. for breakfast. No ham or sausage. For lunch, you can have yogurt every day with wheat germ. Buy the 32 oz. tubs of Dannon Vanilla yogurt. (Stir well). It has acidopholus which is good to keep the balance of good bacteria in yours and baby's tummy, especially if baby is ever on antibiotics.

Eat bananas, apples, pears,etc. Drink one glass of pineapple juice daily, at lunch is good.( Dole is the best) and orange juice at breakfast.

Try grilled steaks or chicken for dinner. Pork chops, lamb, some fish are good for dinner (prepared very simply). No organ meat. Eat your veggies; sweet peas, carrots, salads, possibly broccoli, spinach, etc... is good . Watch out for raddishes,
cauliflower. Pasta with butter or a very mild tomato sauce you made is good. White, red, and sweet potatoes are good also.

You can't put down an answer that you don't know anything about. You are misleading the asking mother. Dairy is good for the Mom and baby. Not everyone is allergic to the same things . That is why you start out slowly, adding or eliminating items as time goes on.

I checked out a referring website in one of these answers-Kellymom.com and I disagree with many things she says. She doesn't seem to have much experience, no less any medical experience.

Please be open-minded and take into account other people's answers. Mothers have to help each other, not compete.

With my daughter all I had to stay away from was coffee. With my son it was green vegies and acidic foods. By 4 months it all settled down. I don't drink wine but apparently one of the worst things is red wine

stay away from spicey foods and eat healthy foods and maybe stay away from fried foods but i would just do trial and erro or ask your doctor.

anything that will go through the blood and upset him like chili, onions garlic anything that hits your tummy with either wind or smells or tastes is going to affect him
