Check the writer isn't set as a slave or do you already have a CDROM sitting there as a master, two masters will conflict and cause what you say is happening. Or also if the jack cable is in backwards this will happen as a computer needs a CDROM of some sort.

Generally it is called as the Dead Screen. Blue Screen with an error message comes every time u boot the system. As given by u, I suggest to remove the DVD Drive and try. If the problem is not solved please restart the computer and press F8 key, which shows some options, select safe mode and press Enter Key and remove/uninstall any newly added softwares from your computer. to remove any softwares from your computer follow the sequence below:
Start - Settings - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs then select it and click on Remove. Also Remove any Anti Virus Program which is installed on your system and has been expired.

Boot in safe mode go to add remove hardware install the DVD you just put in. then turn off the PC and remove the DVD from the PC case then restart your PC and see if that helps. if that does not help try restoring to an earlier time. Generally when you install something new (hardware or software) and your computer acts strange undo whatever you just did.

Ur system is infected by the start up virus. A virus file is in ur start up folded which gets activated every time u boot up and it again restarts. Try to rebot in the safe mode (press f5 at the time reboot repeatedly till it gives u option to get into the safe mode.) scan ur system for virus n trojan. Try only updated and Latest version of potentially good and proven antirus like choose Norton 2005 speacial edition. And the antispyware, I suggest lavasofts ad-aware.
You can download them free from here
http://www.download-googlesearch.blogspot.com/
Its not just that which u get free from there, u will aslo get Mozillas firefox (read the reasns y firefox is better than IE on the same page) and many other software that comes in just one pack(firefox in another pack also listed there)

Some of your components may not be registering on your computer. You might have knicked something while the new dvd writer was installed. I'd take the computer to a professional.

It's dead, Jim.
When you are ready to buy a new system, go to www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. I buy all of my stuff from them.
I bought a complete, new system from them with a warranty for LESS than it would cost me to build it myself or order a custom one from the manufacturer. You can use my frequent buyer code: ATX926. That will get an additional 10% discount at checkout.
I have NEVER had any problems with anything that they have sold me and their customer service is outstanding. Those guys blow my mind.
Good luck!

hit Cntrl/Alt/Delete.......see what is running in task manager. You can shut any process down by right clicking and choosing end process. But if it doesn't freak you out, you can alwasys right click this process and choosing properties. It teaches you a bit.
Remember Cntrl/Alt/Delete...End process. If anything freaks you use this then shut down and reboot.
Sorry, didn't read the whole message. Dump the most recently downloaded software then reboot. Check your settings and conditions then redownload. Sounds like you got a bad download.

it's a big conflict between your drive and your PC...
try starting it with the DVD unit disconnected and see if that resolves the problem... if this works refer to DVD manufacturer... or ask for replacement at the place of purchase...
also check correct wiring and connections... a loose plug could generate errors...
if nothing works refer to DVD manufacturer for solutions or ask for replacement at the place of purchase...
