Peripheral Component Interconnect Bus - fast local bus standard that provides fast data transfer within a PC - has superseded ISA. It is a specific design of local bus introduced by Intel. The PCI bus permits up to 10 expansion cards to be added to the PC.Examples are video and sound cards, which will run a bit faster.

A PCI card is a computer peripheral. It's basicall a card that does something that the mother board can't do. For example, if you want to install a firewire drive, but your computer doesn't have a firewire connector, you buy a firewire card and plug it into a PCI slot.

Older computers used a different type of connector called EISA, and before that, ISA. The difference between the connectors is in the number of bits of data that can go through them at one time, and the speed at which they can transfer. PCI is much faster and can handle more data than the two previous. PCI also utilizes Plug n Play, meaning that a compatible card requires little or no manual configuration.
