Actually the game of american football was invented by George Washington. The British troops were playing soccer during their breaks from fighting in the revolution. Washington noticed that they called it football. He wanted to piss off the British so he had his troops make an american version of the game. He challenged the Brits and when they saw the way the Americans played the game. The Brits ran off scared to death. I think it is why they lost the war.

Rugby Union, Rugby League and AFL are called football in Australia. There would be almost as much ball kicking in AFL as in soccer. These are the majority games. The round ball game is called soccer and is a minority sport. So the USA is not the only place where it is called soccer. Get used to it.

Actually, the ball can be kicked at any time on offense. I'm not sure what the '' one time '' is that you are referring to. A field goal or punt can happen at any time on offense. They normally wait until 4th down though. They used to drop kick for points. The ball had to touch the ground before it was kicked. I guess it's called football because points can be scored with the feet. In basketball, baseball, tennis and other sports, the feet can't be used to contact the ball.

And why do the europeans call soccer, football when you use your feet, your hands (goalie), and your head? Why isn't it called foot/hands/head-ball? Face it, soccer will never be more than a minor sport in the US. It is much to slow and boring. Europe loves it, let them have it. American football is growing worldwide, deal with it.

why do Europeans call it football if they're allowed to also use their heads? Football is a misleading term, I hereby order the Eurpoeans to change it.

It is just the name that stuck, there is no other reason. Soccer comes from the English so don't blame the U.S. for that. Deal with it it just is!
