Go to www.stupidcheapcomputers.net. I buy all of my stuff from them.

I bought a complete, new system from them with a warranty for LESS than it would cost me to build it myself or order a custom one from the manufacturer. You can use my frequent buyer code: ATX926. That will get an additional 10% discount at checkout.

I have NEVER had any problems with anything that they have sold me and their customer service is outstanding. Those guys blow my mind.

Dell has had some SERIOUS customer service issues recently. Personally, I won't buy a Dell for any amount of money b/c they treated my mom like she was stupid for asking a question. She's getting her Master's degree in education, so she's not stupid. She has been using computers since 1980 so she's not lacking there either! My own opinion is: SCREW DELL!

HP makes Compaq. Compaq is how they label their higher quality business models. Compaq used to be a competing company but HP bought them out and kept the brand name for marketing purposes. I have 5 HP computers and love them all.

Good luck!

don't base it on budget...base your choice on your needs. :) if you're going to use it for basic computing (presentations, spreadsheets, browsing), you aren't in need of high end dual core unit, or a Mac - which takes some getting used to.
just get a mid-priced unit from the big brands (Lenovo, Dell, HP-Compaq, etc.) and make sure you have the ff:
1) enough RAM 512mb up
2) enough disk space 100GB up
3) a DVD-Rom/Burner
4) a good warranty contract / with excellent customer service help line

And probably something that's easy to carry and has a good design (none of those bulky laptops - maybe you want a sleek, red notebook! ).

If you want more specs, go to pcworld.com, pcmagazine.com, or epinions.com.

I have a Panasonic Toughbook that I'm liking a lot so far. I got it for $150.00 on ebay. It's not the most recent model, but I don't need the bells & whistles. I picked the Toughbook because I travel a lot, I'd like to put the computer in my checked baggage rather than go through the rigamarole of pulling it out for security inspection, and the Toughbook is what its name suggests - tough, with an outer shell that protects it from jolts and bangs.

i would recomend DELL. Dell computers have superior craftsmanship; u can order costomized to your liking; u get an included warranty, that can be extend for neglegeble price to included accidnetial damage that covers dropping or whatever crazy mishap u can think of. All of the components in Dells are top-shelf. With the purchase of a dell you get on-line customer support , and via phone.
However, do not buy fromretailer; Buy directly from Dell. Retailers will increase the price subtantially, and u can not customize it your way if u do not order directly fromm dell. You have soo many models to choose from when u consider DELL.

After asking around, all fingers pointed to HP. I bought a Hp pavillion dv5000. It has absolutely everything that you could eed for an average user. It cost around $1100 at the time of purchase a year ago, so its prob for like $900 now. Great buy!
