No nerve endings in the cord that link to the baby nor the mother. Its a transport line for food and stuff.

It does usually get "thrown away" although some parents choose to keep the cord's blood in case the baby needs it later on in life. And No it does not hurt the mother or the baby while it's being cut you don't feel a thing =)

There are no nerve endings in the cord and also it is pinched off at the end by his belly button with a plastic clip- this cuts off all blood flow.

Good question!
Here's why... (plus a bunch more Umbilical Cord info...)
The umbilical cord is made of Wharton's jelly, not ordinary skin and connective tissue. There are no nerves, so cutting it is not painful.

Never heard of Wharton's Jelly.
Neat. I didn't know that!
Thanks for a great question!!

There probably aren't any nerve endings in the cord, otherwise it would hurt.

Because even though it is attached to the baby it is not a part of their nerves system

because there aren't pain recepotors in the cord... you have to have pain receptors in order to feel pain... this is why you can't feel it as well as why you can't tell when you are damaging your hearing....
