You can not compare two great entertainers with different styles in the same era. Both were good.
Elvis changed the face of Rock and Roll music and Johnny Cash became a HUGE Country and Western Star with many hits. Naturally Elvis' career was shorter and Elvis never toured outside the USA like Johnny Cash did but to me they both sit at the big table when Great Entertainers are discussed.

Career wise I have to say it is hard to say. Think about Johnny Cash outsold Elvis back in the days, but was known more until recently. I ddnt even know who he was until he was at the awards. Elvis was known because he was a hottie and he did alot of movies. Women adored him so, because women rule he became famous, because he was hot in the movies. That is what Elvis was known as the King. It is hard to say, but I definitely have to say Elvis had it better, because he got to do what he loved singing and he got to act. Johnny Cash only did the singing.

Elvis, you are just hearing quite a lot of Johnny Cash right now cause it has not been long since his passing. With the publicity of the movie etc.....Then June Carter Cash passing on.....

Elvis was a fool....if he is so much better why did Johnny Cash's album outsell his back in the 60s....so yeah Johnny Cash ruled back then and even now. Who had the longer career who is still selling albums...yeah its Johnny Cash without a doubt!
